The arctic skua (Stercorarius parasiticus) breeding population in the Faroe Islands has declined markedly over the past decade. This project aims to describe some fundamental aspects of their biology, and assess if they show any signs of heat stress during incubation on high air temperature days.

Foundational research was carried out on the Faroese Arctic skua (Stercorarius parasiticus) population on Fugloy. While some knowledge gaps persist (such as limited knowledge about their diet), this project gained new and important insight into Arctic skua breeding ecology in the Faroes such as clutch and egg sizes and laying dates. An extensive amount of incubation observations were made, which are currently being analysed as part of one partners Masters project at University of Copenhagen.

The project also successfully deployed 30 GLS loggers onto Arctic skuas, which will give unprecedented insight into their migration routes and wintering areas. The work also proved that other types of logger deployments might be viable. Blood and feather sampling of these adult Arctic skuas will also allow for future toxicological analysis when the neccesary funding can be aquired.

The project proved it viable to catch, handle and observe a sufficient number of arctic skuas for future research
